A Magnificent Phoenix Rises Above San Francisco

When a spirited phoenix graces a city, it's a sign that San Francisco is full of life and magic.

Once upon a time, a radiant woman named Lillie Hitchcock Coit, known for her joyous spirit and generosity, desired more than just a routine tribute for her fallen fellow citizens. She envisioned a stunning concrete phoenix, a symbol of rebirth, to rise from the very heart of the city, proudly perched atop a tower that danced with the sky. This magnificent creation, completed in 1933, was made possible by the $118,000 left in her will. The mesmerizing Coit Tower now crowns the charming Telegraph Hill neighborhood, adorned with the whimsical and fascinating Art Deco style on the outside and filled with the striking masterpieces of more than 20 artists within.

The tower invites visitors to explore a 360-degree tableau of the city, a magical fusion of history, culture, and the human spirit. It's worth noting that the Coit Tower was not built as a solemn tribute to the fallen, but a cheerful addition to the city as per Coit's own dreams. Also, the original plan was for the tower to rise at Lake Merced, but it found its nest on Telegraph Hill. Lastly, the Coit Tower is marked on the National Register of Historic Places, although it is not officially recognized as a California Historical Landmark.
