Walking trails and a rose garden in Washington Park

Explore Washington Park in Springfield, Illinois, a historic site featuring a botanical garden, a carillon, and the Velasco Tennis Center.

Welcome to Washington Park, a heritage site nestled in the heart of Springfield, Illinois. Purchased for city use in 1900 with construction beginning in 1901, the park is operated by the Springfield Park District. To prepare the site for its current state, substantial drainage and dredging were required to turn the wetland portions into ponds and grassy space. As a historical landmark, Washington Park offers maintained grounds that invite the senses to explore.

Upon entering the Washington Park Botanical Garden, you will be greeted by a diverse array of flora, containing over 1200 species, including more than 150 species of tropical plants in a 9,000 square foot greenhouse. Roam through the outdoor gardens, such as the iris garden, the rock garden, and the cactus garden. The rose garden commands your attention, showcasing 5,000 plants that contrast with the park's wetland origins.

The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon brings music to life with 67 bells built by Petit & Fritsen. Carillon concerts are held year round every Sunday and on Wednesday evenings during summer months, with tower tours available daily.

For those seeking activity, the Velasco Tennis Center is located in the park. The facility contains 12 courts, six of which are lighted, and a pro shop. It serves as the home venue for the UIS Prairie Stars men's and women's tennis teams. Washington Park is a destination where you can find walking trails, a large duck pond, and a botanical garden within a single historic space.
