Artificial grotto with a spring

Just off the road, not far from the Arsenal, a spring flows from a small artificial grotto and trickles as a thin stream into the Lamskiye Ponds. In 1890, according to the design of architect Silvio Danini, a granite canopy-grotto in the shape of a hemisphere was built over the spring, along with granite steps leading down to it. Nearby stands a granite bench to rest and drink the spring water.

Once, even Emperor Nicholas II himself did not disdain the water from this spring. Even now, on a hot day after a walk, the spring water is very welcome, and a small queue forms at the grotto. No one has ever been poisoned by the spring water, but the State Museum-Reserve "Tsarskoye Selo" explicitly disclaims any possible responsibility and on its website does not recommend drinking the spring water, as its parameters do not meet the standards for drinking water in terms of hardness.
