The Art Deco architecture of the Cary Street Park and Shop Center

Step into Richmond's Carytown to explore the Cary Street Park and Shop Center, a historic Art Deco shopping center built in 1938.

In the heart of Richmond's Carytown district is the Cary Street Park and Shop Center, also known as the Cary Court Shopping Center. Developed by the C.F. Sauer family, this historic shopping center was built in 1938 in the Art Deco style.

The structure is essentially a one-story building in the shape of an elongated U, constructed of brick, granite, limestone, and marble veneer. While the original center dates back to 1938, two rectangular wings were completed in 1949 and 1951.

The exterior features a prominent parking area, an uninterrupted string of large modern aluminum and glass doors, and commercial storefront windows. It is characterized by a stepped limestone parapet, curved windows, and a low, projecting stucco canopy. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
