Rising from the ashes of a 17th-century war, the Swedish royal residence took four more years to build, twice as tall as the castle it replaced.

In 1697, a Swedish royal palace known then as Tre Kronor Castle burned to the ground. King Karl XI immediately commissioned Nicodemus Tessin the Younger to design a grander palace to take its place. Construction started on the same spot where Tre Kronor once stood in 1692. However, the building process of Stockholm Palace was not completed until 1754. Even though the palace was already standing in the 1730s, it was not ready for use until 1754. The new palace was twice the height of the old one and was built after a halt due to the Great Northern War (1700-1721).
