Welcome to Niles, Illinois, where a whimsical dream comes alive! In an effort to showcase the beauty of Ilgair Park's pools and lakes, a visionary named Robert Ilg commissioned the creation of a European style Leaning Tower of Pisa Replica in 1934. Designed by Albert L. Farr, this charming structure is more than just an imitation, it is a heartwarming testament to the art of hidden treasures. Leaning slightly at an angle of approximately 11 degrees, it is a unique and captivating sight, distinct from its Italian counterpart's 5.5-degree lean.
However, it is the five enchanting bells hidden within that make this Leaning Tower exceptional. Whether forged in Italy centuries ago, in Cavezzo in the 17th and 18th centuries, or more recently, they have found a beautiful home here in the heart of Niles. The tower has undergone transformations over the years. In 1960, it became the Leaning Tower YMCA, and in 1995, a breathtaking US$1.2 million renovation was carried out, beautifully enhancing the structure, façade, and Plaza area.
Today, it shines with four fountains and a 30-foot pool. Yet, it needs ongoing love and care. In 2014, it was reported that the tower requires approximately $600,000 in repairs. On November 17, 2015, the Niles Village Board granted a proposal for its purchase from the YMCA for just $10 and an investment of a further $550,000 for its restoration. While the future care for this Southern European dream may be uncertain, the Leaning Tower of Niles remains a cherished, enduring symbol of our shared love for the treasures of the Old World.
