A Huge Kwagu'ł Totem in Chicago's Lincoln Park: Meet Kwanusila

Did you k n o w? The tall, colorful Kwagu'ł totem pole in Chicago's Lincoln Park, featuring a man on a whale and the Thunderbird, isn't the original. It replaced a 1929 pole!

Erected in 1984, this 40-foot-tall Kwanusila totem pole stands in Chicago's Lincoln Park, specifically at Addison Street just east of Lake Shore Drive within the Lake View neighborhood, Illinois. Created by Tony Hunt Sr, chief of the Kwagu'ł tribe, British Columbia, it's a fine replacement for the 1929 pole donated by James L. Kraft of Kraft Foods to the City. Standing 12.2 meters high, it's sporting a vibrant ensemble of totems. You've got a fearsome sea monster at the base, a daring whale-rider above, and the Thunderbird at the very summit. Over time, the original pole faced the elements and a bit of vandalism. Due to increased appreciation, the 1929 pole now finds itself in a museum in British Columbia, conserved and examined with care.
