Bronze Glance in Union Square, 1881

Union Square hosts a bronze fountain. It's not just water. It's a watchful sculpture.

In 1881, Union Square welcomed the Union Square Drinking Fountain, a gift from Daniel Willis James and Theodore Roosevelt Sr. This creation, designed by J. Leonard Corning, was brought to life by Adolf von Donndorf. It boasts four statues. Three figures create a circle, each with a fixed gaze: a woman, a baby, and a child. The fourth statue's audience remains a mystery.
