Towering 45 feet above South King Street, this Paifang archway establishes the western boundary of the sector. This is no dusty relic recovered from an ancient battlefield. Instead, it represents a modern assembly of heavy steel and southern Chinese ceramics designed for maximum visual impact.
The Historic Chinatown Gate Foundation initiated the deployment order in 1999 and successfully completed the build in late 2007. The logistics team executed a heavy lift by coating the primary frame with 8,000 ceramic tiles imported directly from China. This mission drained $500,000 from the treasury to ensure the objective was met.
High-ranking brass including Mayor Greg Nickels and Governor Christine Gregoire reported to the scene to oversee the official activation. The gate maintains its position in the skyline to this day. Meanwhile, plans for a second gate to the east remain stuck in a bureaucratic logistics loop since 2010.
