Devil's Island, French Guiana
Prison IslandsFrom 1852 to 1952, the island served as a prison for particularly dangerous criminals. The prison was created by the government of Emperor Napoleon III in 1852. It is one of the most infamous penal colonies in history. The forced labor camps were located on all three islands and on the coast of Kuru. Over time, they all became collectively known as "Devil's Island".
