Strolling through the Golden Stool's history halls: Manhyia Palace, Kumasi

Enter the regal residence of the Asantehene, king of the Ashanti Kingdom, in Kumasi. Here you'll find a captivating convergence of history, culture, and architecture, all neatly under one roof.

Step foot in the Manhyia Palace of Kumasi, Ghana, a time capsule that whisks you back to the yesteryears, offering a riveting fusion of traditional Asante style and contemporary architecture. Its roots expand to the late 19th century, but it's the current palace - the one not overshadowed by the War of the Golden Stool and the tales of the Aban Palace - that truly shines. Set in the year 1925, the current Manhyia Palace was constructed by Nana Prempeh I after his return from exile on the Seychelles Islands, footing the bill himself.

Ever since, it's served as his royal abode. The museum inside showcases a treasure trove of artifacts, including the furnishings of the Asanteman kings, the bronze likeness of Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, sketches of the Asanteman, and life-sized wax figures of notable Asanteman royals such as Nana Prempeh I and Opoku Ware II. Only these two Asantehene are known to have inhabited the current Manhyia Palace.
