The Ginormous Gandhi Statue Chillin' in NYC's Union Square

Way back in 1986, a gigantic 8 ft tall, bronze Gandhi sculpture, affectionately known as 'The Whopper,' popped up in Union Square, New York City, right in the heart of Manhattan.

This colossal statue of the legendary Indian, Mahatma Gandhi, was a brilliant concept by artist Kantilal B. Patel. The city received this mammoth gift on October 2, 1986, marking the 117th anniversary of Gandhi's birthday. The statue, which gained the nickname 'The Whopper,' was bestowed by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation, with contributions from Mohan Murjani. It originally R&R'ed in the Union Square heartland, but it needed a bit of some TLC, so it was temporarily relocated in 2001 for a good polishing. It was back in its spot in 2002, where it's been standin' tall until today. The statue's dedication ceremony featured a keynote speech from civil rights leader Bayard Rustin.
