Holon: The Whole Enchilada of Portland, Oregon

Now here's a stone tale, etched in Indiana Limestone, and later polished in granite. It's been astanding fixture since 1979, in Portland's South Park Blocks, a puzzle just waiting for your peepers to unravel.

Holon, a Greek term meaning 'the whole' or 'entire', is a crafty creation by Donald Wilson. Originally sculpted in 1979 from white Indiana Limestone, it was further refined in granite between 2003 and 2004. Today, she stands 54 inches tall, 36 inches wide, and 18 inches deep. You'll find a plaque at her feet that reads: 'HOLON / RECOGNIZING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION AT PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY IN 1961 AND HONORING GORDON HEARN, FOUNDING DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK FROM 1962–1977.' This artwork is a part of Portland-Multnomah County's Public Art Collection, under the care of the Regional Arts & Culture Council. It was originally dedicated to Dr. Hearn in 1961 and is recognised by the Smithsonian Institution as abstract, reflecting Portland State University’s 'holistic' design.
