The Standard Glass and Paint Company Building in Des Moines

Originally built in 1913 for the Standard Glass and Paint Company, this downtown building has been converted into loft apartments and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

In 1913, the Standard Glass and Paint Company Building, also known as 10th Street Lofts, was constructed in the heart of downtown Des Moines. Local contractor J.E. Lovejoy was responsible for the construction of the building, which was built to house the company of brothers Ashton and Ross Clemens. The company was said to be the largest glass and paint business west of Chicago.

Standard Glass and Paint Company was in existence from 1903 to 1979 and served as the leading wholesale and retail supplier of a variety of building and remodeling supplies in Des Moines. The company remained in this building until the mid-1920s, when they moved to the Clemens Automobile Company Building, another property owned by the same family.

After sitting empty until 1931, various wholesale companies occupied the building over the succeeding years. Today, the building has been converted into loft apartments along with the neighboring Herring Motor Car Company Building. It was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
