The Whopping Tales of the Giant Iron Steed: Georgia's Horseless Pegasus

Join us for a yarn about a 12-foot high, 1954-crafted steel equine named Iron Horse, escaping the college life, and the wild ride that led to its nestling near Athens. This tale's as entertaining as it is unforgettable!

First off, we've got Iron Horse, or you might say, Pegasus Without Wings, a shimmering steel colt created by the artistic touch of Abbott Pattison. Originally, it was gracing Reed Hall at the University of Georgia, but that wasn't its last stop. It wrangled up some trouble, causing it to be shuffled off to a barn and then a farm near Watkinsville, Georgia. Fast forward five years, and it found itself under the protection of L.C Curtis, a university professor with a keen green thumb.

In 2012, the land changed hands, finding its way back to the University, but Mr. Curtis held onto the 20-square-foot plot it was on. In 2014, that patch was christened 'The Iron Horse Plant Sciences Farm,' in honor of our sturdy friend. But this yarn doesn't stop there – in 2011, Iron Horse received a bit of a beating, but a secret team sprang into action to nurse it back to health. To prevent any further scrapes, the Curtis family had the sculpture bolted to a concrete slab. The sculpture was transported to Athens for restoration in 2024, but just two days after its return, strong winds toppled it off its pedestal.

Iron Horse has always been a popular subject, with cameos in the 1963 National Educational Television film 'Pegasus Without Wings' and the 1980 William VanDerKloot documentary 'Iron Horse'.
