The stone sentinel guarding Baimainiai: The hillfort named after the village it

The Baimainiai hillfort, known as 'The watcher of Baimainiai', stands in the Panevėžio rajono savivaldybės territory, near Krekenava and Pociūneliai road. Its trapezoidal shape reaches a height of 42 meters and widths of 42 meters in the west and 30 meters in the east. The western part stands at 30 meters in height, 1.7 meters in width, and is marked by a 6-meter-wide ditch. The eastern part has a 0.3-meter-high, 2-meter-wide ditch.

The hillfort is home to two significant mounds - one in the western ditch at 57 meters, and another in the eastern part at 2 meters in height and 9 meters in width. Declared a cultural heritage site in 1968 by the Lithuanian Institute of History, Baimainiai's hillfort may still be hiding secrets about the village's past, although many have faded over time.

Tracing back to the 1st millennium BC, the runes adorning the hillfort could offer further insights into the village’s past, but their decay may be the key to unfolding even more mysteries.
