Lone Finnish Homestead in Oulu, Wisconsin - 2002

In the heart of Oulu, Wisconsin, a long-forgotten Finnish home made its entry onto the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, having been left empty since 1997.

In the eerie wilds of Oulu, Wisconsin, a solitary relic stands - the Finnish John and Justina Palo Homestead, now on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2002, it found its place. With a house, a wellhouse, an outhouse, and a versatile building hosting a sauna, woodshed, and store, this property echoes the stubborn resilience of its Finnish creator, John Palo. John and Justina left this world in 1949 and 1977 respectively. Despite blood ties, the homestead sat deserted until 1997 when Duane Lahti, their grandson, stirred restoration works.
