Tomb Platform - Plataforma de las Tumbas

Dance Platform, Yucatán, Mexico

The platform-tomb in Chichen Itza has three chambers that contained human remains, which is the reason why it was called the platform-tomb.

The tomb platform at Chichen Itza has three chambers that contained human remains, which is why it was named the tomb platform. In the first chamber, two skeletons in very poor condition were found, belonging to male individuals, along with several fragmented vessels. In the second chamber, two more damaged male skeletons were discovered, in addition to two broken vessels, two jade items, a copper rattle, rock crystal, and numerous shell ornaments that lead archaeologists to believe they were part of a mask.

The structure measures 7.8 meters from north to south, 5.6 meters from east to west, and is 1.60 meters high, topped with a relief cornice-frieze of intertwined snakes. Another feature giving the tomb platform its distinctive shape is the presence of six columns, each 1.90 meters tall from the upper level of the structure.

The tomb platform at Chichen Itza is located in the Central Group, and it is the last of four structures arranged in the following order: Tomb Platform, Venus Platform, Round Platform, and Ossuary.
