The missing stone from Pré d'avant Clédie megalithic alignment in France

According to a study published in the journal Antiquity in June 2025, the stone alignments in the Carnac region of France are among the oldest in Europe, dating back to between 4600 and 4300 B.C.E.

One of the lesser-known structures in the region is the Alignement du Pré d'avant Clédie, located in Château-Chervix, in the Haute-Vienne department in France. The alignment was classified as a historical monument on August 4, 1981. However, one of the original five stones is missing, although its location is known. The remaining four stones measure between 1.15m and 1.37m in height and between 0.50m and 1.57m in width.

The Alignement du Pré d'avant Clédie is the only known Megalithic alignment within the department, but it is located within an 8km radius of the Dolmen de la Villedieu in Magnac-Bourg and the Pierre Levée in La Roche-l'Abeille. The study suggests that the Carnac region now appears to be among the earliest Megalithic regions in Europe, with the Alignement du Pré d'avant Clédie being constructed between 4600 and 4300 B.C.E.
