Perekupnoy Lane, 12, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 191024

The molding that decorates the upper and lower floors reveals symbolism related to family and home. The owl under the angled bay window symbolizes wisdom as well as longevity; the thistle, whose leaves entwine the walls of the building, represents marital fidelity. The dome of the bay window somewhat softens the tense strictness, almost severity, of the building. It resembles a nightcap (which can also be associated with the symbol of the "family hearth") and a Gothic spire, giving the building a castle-like appearance and hinting at the German owner. The mascaron under one of the bay windows seems to be "peeking" out of a keyhole, guarding the building against uninvited guests. Together with the spire, this is another comic symbol, since the mascaron-keyhole is located above one of the windows, serving as a keystone. There is a pun here: keyhole — keystone. The word "castle" can also be added to this series.
