Meet the grand watcher of Mount Titan's peak: the ancient Cesta

Perched regally atop Mount Titan, the Cesta - or Fratta - of San Marino, is a thousand-year-old relic, a symbol of independence and sovereignty, brimming with history and culture for the curious visitor today.

The Cesta, affectionately known as 'Fratta', is among three towering sentinels overlooking the city of San Marino. Its companions in vigil are Guaita and Montale. However, the Cesta, San Marino's First Tower and the oldest of the trio, reigns as the stoic guardian of Mount Titan, raised in medieval times. Initially, the tower served as a safe haven for the mount’s castle-dwellers. In the 16th century, it was redesigned to serve as a prison. Hidden within its masonry are the Comacine inscriptions, the Chapel of Saint Barbara, and the Keep, the original core of the fortress that remains unaltered through the ages.

The Great Bell, added mid-16th century, provides an audible component to the tower's grandeur. Visitors can venture inside, taking in the breathtaking vistas, ranging from the Adriatic to Mount Carpegna. Tickets for the tour start from €3, with appealing subscriptions to gain entry to all state museums. Notably, the Cesta was chosen to grace the Republic’s fifty-cent Euro coin, a testament to its significance to Sammarinese identity.
