Gandhi on Massachusetts: Keepin' Calm 'n Carryin' On

On the tasty triangle of Massachusetts Avenue in Pittsburgh, India's tranquil mascot finds itself a rollercoaster ride - you know, the usual city kerfuffle.

Sittin' on a 16-ton plinth of ruby granite imported from Karnataka, this 8-feet-8-inches bronze fella of Mahatma Gandhi, sportin' his signature modest threads, watches over the city. A 2001 commission by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, designed by Kolkata's Gautam Pal, this dude exudes a spiritual, laid-back vibe. But, being the Zen master he is, he's had his fair share of turmoil. First, during the George Floyd protests in ol' June 2020, he, unfortunately, got a bit dirty. The Indian Embassy swung into action, filing a complaint with the local authorities. Then, on December 12, 2020, at a Khalistani separatist rally, our Boss Man was given an unwanted makeover once again.
