The inn that shaped Cervantes' Spain

The Venta de la Inés, or the Alcalde’s Inn, stands in the village of Almodóvar del Campo, in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. It is within the Valle de Alcudia natural space, on the Camino Real de Toledo a Andalucía, or Camino Real de la Plata. This inn was rebuilt in the 16th century and bears witness to the age of ventas, which partook in the most important journeys of the time. Cervantes mentions the ventas in his works from 1575. A distinctive feature of manchegan constructions was the zócalo, which was añil-colored. The Venta de la Inés has one, as do its buildings that include yards, an exterior kitchen, the inn itself, and a stable. The Venta aligns with the Camino Real. It was declared a site of historical interest by the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha on July 28, 2009, and the ruling was upheld by the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha in 2014.
