On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFoe murdered his mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters with a high-powered rifle in their Long Island home. This event marked a dark end for the family residing at the property.
Two years later, George and Kathleen Lutz became the new owners of the house. They began to spread a story that ghosts and evil spirits had scared them out of the house that they had just purchased. This account became a number one best seller, and the subsequent film was a box office smash.
Yet the truth of the ghost story now differs from the fiction that was told. While the book and film flourished, it is now widely accepted that the Lutz story was completely fabricated. The home, located at 112 Ocean Avenue, remains a popular tourist attraction even though it no longer features the iconic quarter moon windows.
