The hilltop chapel with a Romanesque secret

Sant Bartomeu de Vilamitjana, a Romanesque chapel, perches on top of a hill, half a kilometer away from the village that shares its name. It is in Tremp, on the southern slope of the Serra dels Nerets, where the scenery turns rugged. The hamlet that sits around the chapel has stood its ground since the 16th century. In the Fogatge of 1553, it still had four hearths, a number that suggests a population of around twenty inhabitants. The chapel, though, is more intriguing: it is known as Sant Bartomeu de Vilamitjana, but to the architectural historians it is a classic example of Romanesque architecture.
