The Enchanted Gateway to the Cat Goddess's Sanctum - Bubasteion of Saqqara

Beyond the golden dunes of Saqqara lies the Bubasteion of Saqqara, a Ptolemaic and Roman temple, a sanctuary devoted to the Cat Goddess, Bastet. Known as 'The Enchanted Gates of Cats' by the Arabic name, Abwab el-Qotat, this magical hideaway whispers ancient stories of Egypt into its walls and hidden chambers. With more than a hundred cat mummies and thousands of cat bones discovered within, the Bubasteum became as vital as the Bubastis cat cemetery in the second half of the first millennium BC.

Nestled within the sands of Saqqara, the Bubasteion of Saqqara, or Bubasteum, was a temple complex dedicated to Bastet, the Cat Goddess. Known as 'The Enchanted Gates of Cats' by the Arabic name, Abwab el-Qotat, this sanctuary is a treasure trove of ancient Egyptian tales, captivated within its walls and secluded passages. To this day, more than a hundred cat mummies, and thousands of cat bones, have been discovered in the Bubasteum. As significant as the cat cemetery at Bubastis in the second half of the first millennium BC, the cat necropolis in Saqqara became an essential site. Radiographic investigations have shown that the majority of these feline spirits were laid to rest at a tender age, sacrificed by either gentle strangulation or violent blows to the head. In 2019, five lion mummies were unearthed in the necropolis.
