Lost Hillforts of Ivangenez: Ancient Prussian Historical Sites in Lithuania

The Ivangenez archaeological site, situated in Taurage region, close to the hamlet of Ivangenez, on the banks of Suvirkste river, spans a time period from the 1st century BC to the 14th century AD. The site consists of two hillforts, a dwelling, and a fortification. The first hillfort, Pilike, is an earthen mound featuring a dwelling, a fortification, and statues. At its summit, Pilike boasts a pyramid-shaped structure, spanning 30 meters wide and 5 meters deep.

The top of the second hillfort, located approximately 100 meters from the first, is a trapezoid-shaped structure, oriented from south to north, standing 3 meters high and 18 meters wide in its center. The central pyramid-shaped mound in the second hillfort reaches up to 15 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep. The dwelling is located to the south-east, covering an area of 1 hectare. The IV. century – VII. century Prussian fortification was discovered near the dwelling during excavations in 2006.
