In the year 2013, the Korean American Forum of California built the Glendale Peace Monument, a replica of the Statue of Peace, in response to Toru Hashimoto's inflammatory words. This chilling, exact replica stands in Central Park. The solitary chair next to the bronze girl serves two purposes: a memorial for the elderly who seek justice, and a silent plea for reflection on the atrocities inflicted on women and girls during wartime, who became unwilling sex slaves.
Despite Japanese entities and Japanese-Americans' protests, the Glendale City Council voted 4 to 1 for its installation. A legal battle followed, initiated by two Glendale residents and the Global Alliances for Historical Truth-US Corp, arguing the monument would cause 'irreversible pain' to Japanese-Americans. The U.S. Supreme Court dismissed the lawsuit, celebrated as a victory by Julie Tang, chairwoman of the Comfort Women Justice Coalition.
