Artist Clement Meadmore crafted this bodacious behemoth back in 1984, for the LincLAY Corporation, the masterminds behind the Cincinnati Commerce Center. They unveiled the piece in downtown Cincinnati in August of that very year. This abstract artwork dances through space in a wild waltz of planes and angles, with an impressive six bends. It once stood at the intersection of Sixth and Vine Streets, where visitors would shake their heads in awe. To ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially the visually impaired, a 10-inch-high curb was constructed around the entire installation.
In 1999, the Prudential Insurance Company gave the sculpture a facelift and gifted it to St. Xavier High School before revamping the plaza. On October 20th of the same year, Open End found its new home outside Berning Gymnasium, where the students of St. Xavier compare this sculpture to the rubbery legend, Gumby.
