Nestled in the heart of Kentucky, you'll find the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, a must-visit for history buffs. This site is where you'll find one of seven Union monuments, honoring the Union soldiers who battled it out in the state's bloodiest conflict: the Battle of Perryville, which went down on October 8, 1862. On this very date, over 16,000 Union troops squared off against Confederate forces, with a combined total of 4,276 casualties. Fast forward to today, and the Union Monument at the site still stands proudly, serving as a poignant reminder of that fateful conflict. This monument, sanctioned by the United States Congress on March 3, 1928, towers 18 feet high over the landscape, taking the shape of a granite obelisk. Interestingly, it's the only one of the six other Union monuments in Kentucky that was not erected through federal or private funds.
