The ancient shrine in the heart of Italy

At the heart of central Italy, a sanctuary stood where kings were elected and ancient mysteries played out. Where is it now, and what did each visit bring?

Fanum Voltumnae was the principal federal sanctuary of the Etruscans, sacred to a deity named Voltumna. It was likely the site of annual elections of a sacerdos by vote. Solemn games were held at the sanctuary, whose interruption was deemed sacrilege. The location of Fanum Voltumnae was common knowledge, but excavations since 2000 at Campo della Fiera have uncovered a vast sanctuary complex, which current scholarship largely identifies with the Fanum Voltumnae. Excavations are ongoing, so a visit today rewards the curious with a glimpse into the past and a hint at the ancient rites that played out here.
