The Airplane monument was installed in 1981. This monument is interesting because a real aircraft is mounted on the stele. It is a Soviet single-engine all-weather interceptor fighter Su-9, developed in 1956. One of the first Soviet planes with a delta wing. They were part of the air defense forces and used to combat reconnaissance aircraft and balloons. The Su-9 set world records for flight altitude and speed. In 1981, the Su-9 was retired from service.
The airplane was brought from the Samara (then Kuybyshev) region in parts. At the Tyazhpromarmatura plant, a metal stele was designed and constructed. The pedestal was based on one from the city of Ternopil — there, a MiG-15 fighter was mounted on it. The supporting truss was assembled and installed in two months, and another month was spent concreting it. The airplane was lightened by cutting out unnecessary parts, lifted to the required height by two crawler cranes, and then simply "mounted" onto the stele. Engineers from Tyazhpromarmatura devised a special adapter — it was inserted into the cavity left in the Su-9 after the turbine was removed and secured with bolts.
Spruce trees are planted near the monument. They cover the base of the stele, thus creating the impression of flight.
