Place Blanche means "White Square". The origins of the name date back to the times when white sandstone was mined on Montmartre hill. In the end of XIX century the "red light district" emerged in the area. The "White Square" became home to the "Red Mill" - the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. And people started coming here for entertainment instead of sandstone.
