Watchtower (Torre de Vigilancia)

At the northwest and southwest corners of the fortress wall, structures have been erected, with entrances accessed by steps resting on the inner wall. The watchtowers, or "Fortress Towers," are located at the corners of the fortified area of Tulum. Although they are called towers, their function was not defensive but religious. These small temples apparently did not serve military purposes, as they lacked openings for observing the walls; instead, these temples have three entrances and an altar at the back wall for sacrifices. Originally, the facades were painted with geometric patterns.
