1893's Behemoth, SS Glenlyon: Drowned in chilly Lake Superior

Once a grand sight, the hulking SS Glenlyon now rests forlorn at the frigid depths of Lake Superior, a remote sight off Isle Royale. Not the park's most popular dive in Isle Royale National Park.

SS Glenlyon, born in 1893, was a colossal freighter, able to carry 3,800 tons. Its past glory met its icy end off Isle Royale in 1924. Now, the wreckage resides 15 to 60 feet under Lake Superior's surface, ready for the brave. Despite its isolation, Isle Royale National Park boasts more frequented wrecks. The wreckage tells of the shifting ship pieces, swayed by currents and ice floes. SS Glenlyon stands alone, the lone relic of its kind and size, available for underwater archaeologists.
