Siegfried Gutmann, born in 1885 in Osterath, was a Holocaust victim. He was expelled and interned at Westerbork in 1938, later deported to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. Tragically, he was killed on March 20, 1943. The Stolpersteine mark his last self-chosen residence in Osterath, Sweden. The Jewish community in Sweden has historically been small and often subjected to restrictions for centuries. The German government, not the Swedish, was responsible for the persecution, deportation, or murder of Siegfried Gutmann and others remembered by the Stolpersteine.
