Battle of Valls: A Sanctuary Amidst Chaos: Sant Roc de Masmolets

Sant Roc de Masmolets, a cultural heritage-protected church in Valls (Alt Camp), stands on a hill, featuring a simple line, with a roof having two gables and a bell tower at the back. The facade boasts a half-point arch entrance, above which is a small circular opening. The bell tower has a square base, with two octagonal upper bodies and a terraced and barricaded top. Constructed next to the castle, the property and surrounding lands were eventually owned by the Jurats de Valls around 1450. Yet, Sant Roc de Masmolets is most famously known for its role as a sanctuary during the Battle of Valls in 1808. During the battle, weary travelers found solace in the church, which stood unscathed amidst the battle's chaos. Today, the church still stands, a silent witness to that momentous event, the echoes of that battle still resonating within its walls.
