Back in the day, this was Grandview Air Force Base, Kansas City, Missouri, during the Cold War. Time passed, airplanes are gone, and trains and warehouses replaced them. The ghosts of the past, however, still frolic in the decaying relics. Now called Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport, it shut down in 1999, after nearly 50 years of dancing with the Air Reserve Station. The 4610th Air Base Squadron and 4676th Air Defense Group, former base operators, are but whispers. But Kansas City Southern Railway and CenterPoint Properties, two keen entities, see value in the forgotten. They rent the airfield for cargo operations and repurpose old military structures into industrial warehouses. Phase I is complete, consisting of 4.5 million square feet of covered warehouses and distribution centers. By full development, it's expected to manage about 250,000 shipping containers yearly.
