On the outskirts of Portland's Lloyd District, jus' a stone's throw from the Oregon Convention Center, you'll find an extraordinary bronze statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Nicknamed 'The Dream', this masterpiece by Michael Florin Dente shows King stridin' forward, his eyes on the horizon, with three allegorical figures by his side: a working-class fella, a lady symbolizin' immigration, and a young girl representin' the universal message of equality, freedom, and justice.
The statue's been part of the City of Portland and Multnomah County Public Art Collection, and it's a common meetin' spot for gatherings, walks, and tours. About seventy-five bronze replicas of The Dream exist, with pieces of the original mold headed to each replica's owner once all have been cast.
The statue was dedicated by the Martin Luther King Jr. Statue Foundation, and the mayors of both Portland and Houston were present at the dedication ceremony. In 2007, City Commissioner candidate Charles Lewis held his campaign announcement at The Dream statue, and a march honoring Dr. King began at the statue in 2008. In 2014, The Dream statue was the first stop on a 'Housing History Tour' of Portland.
