Kozhevennaya Line, 25, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 199106
The Kozhevennaya Line in the southwestern part of Vasilievsky Island was laid out in the 1780s. Its appearance is connected with the relocation of all the leather factories of St. Petersburg to this area. These industries were characterized by unpleasant odors, which led to their displacement to the outskirts of the city. In the 18th century, the new route was called the "road to the leather factories." Its even-numbered side sometimes bordered the bay, so in the 1830s it had another name — Beregovaya Line (Coastal Line). However, the currently existing name — Kozhevennaya Line — became the official one.
In the 18th century, the street's development was sparse; most of the land here was occupied by gardens and vegetable plots. At the beginning of the street is house No. 3 — a rare building that has preserved its typical architectural appearance from the 1720s-1730s.
During the Soviet era, industrial construction continued on Kozhevennaya Line. Here were built the buildings of CHP-7, which provides heat to Vasilievsky Island, new buildings for the chintz-printing factory, and the "Sevkabel" enterprise.
Kozhevennaya Line is part of the historic Chekushi district. Until recently, it was considered a kind of remote corner of Vasilievsky Island with gloomy industrial enterprises and almost a complete absence of classic landmarks (the exception being the Brusnitsyn mansion). Now Kozhevennaya is transforming.
The first agent of change was the design space InterLoft at Kozhevennaya, 30. When in the summer of 2016 a music venue was additionally opened on the roof of the former leather factory, fashionable crowds started to come here. "Kozhevennaya was unrecognizable — just like Tverskaya Street. Bentleys arrived, beautiful girls in fox fur coats and high heels," recalls Alexandra Kampinski. In 2018, the public space "Sevkabel Port" on the cable factory grounds became the main new attraction for city residents; people came here for festivals, to sit in bars, to visit flea markets, and simply to photograph the view of the bay and the Western High-Speed Diameter (ZSD) from the landscaped embankment. In 2022, a new public space MoRe opened; bars and restaurants will be added to the music venues K30 and Roof Place. And in two years, the space is promised to be fully landscaped and connected with "Sevkabel Port."
