Hotel Het Arresthuis is an old 19th-century Dutch prison.

Pollartstraat 7, 6041 GC Roermond, Netherlands

Originally built around 1850, the Arretheis prison building was actively used, renovated, and expanded until the end of the 20th century. This monumental former prison complex occupies almost an entire city block in the historic center of Roermond. When the prison was closed in 2007, the buildings remained vacant, providing an opportunity for a complete redevelopment of this part of the city, with the main idea being to preserve the original historic buildings and demolish the rest.

The Het Arresthuis hotel is located in the Dutch city of Roermond. Unlike Rotterdam, the skyline here is still dominated by the towers of two 13th-century churches: the Cathedral of Saint Christopher and the Roermond Cathedral, or "Münsterkerk" in Dutch. The old town is situated right on the banks of the Meuse River, featuring the familiar coastal architecture typical of the Netherlands and a medieval stone bridge.

Originally built around 1850, the Arresthuis prison building was actively used, renovated, and expanded until the end of the 20th century. This monumental former prison complex occupies almost an entire city block in the historic center of Roermond. When the prison was closed in 2007, the buildings were left vacant, providing an opportunity for a complete redevelopment of this part of the city, with the main idea being to preserve the original historic buildings and demolish the rest.

In total, 105 former prison cells were restored into stylish rooms, while retaining some elements as a tribute to their heritage in the form of original doors. Four luxurious apartments were given fitting names: The Jailer, The Lawyer, The Director, and The Judge. The prison block was transformed into spacious suites, with three cells connected together. One cell was turned into a bedroom, the second into a living room, and the third into a bathroom. The building retained its original character as a residential space, and the atmosphere of the former prison complex is still evident thanks to the integration and restoration of elements such as cell doors, prison bars, cast-iron staircases, and stair landings.

The striking view of the old prison corridor recalls its past. It was converted into a lounge, and instead of the loud shouts of guards, you will find peace, colorful LED lights, and extravagant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The former prison gym was converted into a fitness center. It is now equipped with modern cardio machines and large windows overlooking the old town of Roermond. Another addition is a sauna, which was previously inaccessible. The Damianz restaurant on the hotel grounds serves delicacies that prisoners could only dream of. The inner courtyard now serves as a café and terrace surrounded by olive trees. For those of you who want to throw the party of a lifetime, Het Cellenblok, also known as the cell block, will be the perfect venue.
