One of the most famous works of architect Fyodor Ivanovich Lidval is the building of the Azov-Don Bank. However, not everyone knows that in our city there is another building created by Lidval for this bank. It is the house for the employees of the Azov-Don Bank. The building was constructed in 1914-1915 and became one of Lidval’s last works in Petersburg.
It has an H-shaped plan. Two wings, parallel to Professor Popov Street, are connected by a transverse wing.
Initially, it was planned that the transverse wing would become the axis of symmetry of the building and it would have two open cour d'honneur. However, during construction, the length of the longitudinal wings was somewhat reduced, and only one cour d'honneur was made. Most of the second courtyard was occupied in 1916 by a three-story wing.
From the cour d'honneur, passageways lead to the rear yard. Interestingly, they pass through light wells. The building was intended for people of modest means. Therefore, it is located on what was then the outskirts of the city, and the apartments were small by the standards of that time.
The central wing housed two-room apartments, while the side wings contained three- and four-room apartments.
The building is adorned with modest but elegant decoration.
