In St. Petersburg, a monument was unveiled to doctors who died during the pandemic.

On the embankment of the Karpovka River in St. Petersburg, a monument was unveiled to medical workers who passed away during the coronavirus pandemic. The bronze sculpture "Sad Angel" was created by St. Petersburg artist Roman Shustrov, who himself died of COVID-19 in May 2020.

The "Sad Angel" does not have plaques with the names and photographs of the deceased medical workers, which distinguishes it from the popular memorial "Wall of Memory," which stood on the site of the sculpture until November 2020. The memorial appeared on Malaya Sadovaya Street in April 2020. Activists placed portraits of medical workers who died fighting COVID-19 there, leaving flowers and candles. In total, more than a hundred photographs were collected there.

The monument, installed on March 3 on the Karpovka embankment, is the third angel sculpture by Roman Shustrov installed in St. Petersburg. The first two are located in the Izmailovsky and Lyubashinsky gardens.
