The Beppery Behemoth: A Monstrous Mound by De Maria, 1977, Wooster Street,

In the heart of 1977, a dreadful mountain of dirt found its way onto Wooster Street, settling in the neighborhood of Tribeca, New York City. But it wasn't construction; no, it was art. By Walter De Maria.

Since 1977, the NY Earth Room, a grand, gruesome hillock, has rested on Wooster Street in Tribeca, New York City. This colossal weighs a staggering 450 tons or, more precisely, it takes up 250 cubic yards. Before its permanent residence in the Big Apple, this peculiar artwork had bounced around other homes. Now, the Dia Art Foundation, who also manage an apartment on the same floor, keep it on display, inviting all to witness its oddity.
