On July 25 or 26, the head of the district police, Brazaitis, ordered the police to go to the village of Valakai, located about 2 kilometers from Linkuva. Prior to this, the Jewish men of Linkuva had been escorted to the farm of a Jew named Zalke. Brazaitis and several officers of the security police and SD from Šiauliai arrived the next morning.
From a witness interrogation:
"They were walking on foot. They were guarded by 4 partisans. First, they were locked in a barn in Linkuva, then brought here for the shootings.
Were the guards also on foot?
Yes, they all walked on foot. At first, there were 4 partisans. Later, several Germans arrived by car and took several photographs.
When exactly did these Germans arrive?
The Jews were already here. The Germans arrived after the shooting started and took several photographs."
The police took the Jews to a forest near the village of Dvariukai, about 6 kilometers from Linkuva. The victims were forced to undress and then stand at the edge of a pit prepared in advance for them. The killings lasted almost two hours. That day, the police killed between 180 and 200 Jewish men.
