The Monteverde Mystery: A Quaint Italian Church Hiding a Rich History

Journey through the rustic heart of Italy and uncover the enigma shrouding a church perched atop a hill, meandering above four valleys. What treasures lie hidden beneath its simple exterior?

Tucked away in the agro of Vinchiaturo, within the Molise region of Italy, at a towering 1000 meters on La Rocca hill in Monteverde, lies the mysterious Monastero di Santa Maria. Whispers claim it as one of the first settlements in the region, standing alongside San Vincenzo al Volturno and Santa Maria di Canneto. From its vantage point, it keeps watch over the four valleys: Mirabello Sannitico to the east, Bojano to the west, Sepino to the south, and Campobasso to the north.

The Monastero, synonymous with the Benedictine order, dates back to the 11th century. Yet, it found a new identity by the 12th century, as a rural church, owing to the noble Beneventan Tertullo. Its role as the seat of the stone workers' corporation added to its significance, along with the monks’ evangelization, pastoris, and agricultural activities. But the Monastero continues to withhold many secrets, and with enough digging, you might just glimpse the relics of its illustrious past.
