Sizeable Peaceowski Pals: Gigantic Elephant Sculpture Chilling in PDX

Peep the 4.3m tall, 2002 bronze artwork of two serene elephants, sprinkling peace and prosperity right in the heart of Portland.

This grand ol' sculpture, affectionately known as the 'Universal Peace and Baby Elephant', was maestro-ed in 2002 by an anonymous artist. It's a gift from Honcho Huo Baozhu and can be found right at the crossroads of Northwest Park Avenue and West Burnside Street, nestled comfortably within the North Park Blocks in Portland, Oregon, USA. Reaching a whopping 135 inches skyward, with a 77-inch width and 168-inch length, this architectural amigo displays a pint-sized elephant atop a larger one--a symbol of a prosperous future for the little ones.

The moniker of this masterpiece, 'Da Tung', means 'universal peace', while 'Xi'an Bao Bao' translates to 'baby elephant' in English. This statuesque beauty is sixteen times larger than its original inspiration, a tea kettle from the olden Shang dynasty. The tiny cloud patterns and mythical critters from yesteryear, adorning the intricate surfaces, are a visual nod to diversity in eras, lifestyles, and cultural movements. The Regional Arts & Culture Council, the guardians of this work, say it's 'Playful. Fits seamlessly into the environment, with winks to diversity in generations, activities, and cultures.'
