The production of polonium starts from bombardment of bismuth (209Bi) with neutrons at the Mayak nuclear reactors in Ozersk, near the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia.
The Mayak production facility was top-secret during the cold war and still its operations are classified to a large extent.
