Slap-bang in the middle of Milwaukee, Wisconson, the Roosevelt Creative Arts Middle School proudly flaunts a remarkable masterpiece: the Red 'n' Black Spiral. This abstract delight, a splash of vibrant red and black, is the school's artistic calling card. Wander through its winding ways, and you'll trip over hidden stories ready to spill. But this work of art didn't just pop up one day. Under a crisp October sky in 1989, Linda Nice, Milwaukee's beloved maestra, carved her artistic signature into the school's creative landscape.
To pay tribute, the Milwaukee Public Schools reached out to the talented Indian artist, Narendra Patel, who worked his magic within the sculpture studio of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, shaping over two tons of steel into the striking design of the Red 'n' Black Spiral. The result was a surging inspiration, brightening the school, forever christening it: the Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts. Just above the artwork hangs a plaque: 'Celebrating the Arts / Created by Narendra Patel / in tribute to / Linda Nice / Beloved Music Teacher / Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts / Dedicated on October 12, 1989'. This is the story of the Red 'n' Black Spiral, a sotto voce memorial to a teacher who captured many hearts.
