In September 1941 (the exact day is unknown), Jewish women and children were killed in Veiviržėnai. The executioners were three Gestapo officers from the GPZ Bayoren (Baiorai) and two to three Lithuanians. Among them were Gestapo officer Meissner and Lithuanian Prashinskas. Jewish men had already been killed in July 1941; in the same month, all Jewish women and children were captured by Lithuanian police under the orders of the GPP Bayoren and taken to the Trepkalnė estate. There, they were forced to work for local farmers who also supplied them with food. They were guarded by one Lithuanian worker.
When the local priest learned that Pranshinskas and several others were preparing to shoot the women and children, he wanted to save them by baptizing them. He also informed the mayor of Uselis, who had been appointed to the position by the German authorities. Uselis also tried to prevent the shooting through the local German administrative chief. Both appeals were unsuccessful.
On the day of the execution, the Jews were brought to the execution site from the Trepkalnė estate. A pit had already been prepared there. No details about the execution itself are known.
The general order to execute the Jewish women and children came from the head of the Gestapo in Tilsit (Sovetsk), SS Sturmbannführer Hans-Joachim Böhme; the actual order came from SS Obersturmführer Franz Berendt.
Employees of GPB Bayoren and Pranas Lukis (it is unclear whether he participated in the shooting) reported the execution to the Gestapo in Tilsit, from where it was reported to the RSHA and the leader of Einsatzgruppe A, SS Brigadeführer Franz Walter Stahlecker. In total, about 300-400 people were executed.
